Long term use of systemic glucocorticoids is not recommended (Postma et al., 1988), (Postma et al., 1985), (Decramer et al., 1996), (Decramer et al., 1994), (Decramer and Stas, 1992) [evidence level I]

Indeed, caution in the long term use of systemic glucocorticoids is necessary because of limited efficacy and potential toxicity in elderly patients.
